This route covers about 600 miles of CSX trackage throughout Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky. The main terminals are Indianapolis (Avon), Evansville, Lafayette, and Danville, IL. With the three lines on this route, it can get quite busy. The first one is North-South from Woodland Junction, IL, to Henderson, KY, which covers Danville, IL, Terre Haute, IN, Evansville, IN, and Henderson, KY. The second line is East-West from Harrisville, IN, to Smithboro, IL, which continues a bit west to St. Louis, IL, covering Anderson, IN, the Indianapolis Terminal, Terre Haute, IN, and Effingham, IL. The third line runs North-South from Lafayette, IN, to Indianapolis, IN, covering a portion of Amtrak's Cardinal service, which runs tri-weekly. Indianapolis is home to the Avon Hump Yard, which handles about 25 or so trains a day in and out of the yard. In Terre Haute, IN, both the Indianapolis and Evansville lines cross, allowing some trains to transfer between routes, demonstrating the connectivity CSX has in this area. Terre Haute is also home to INRD operations that you can see on this route today!
