Visitations Of England and Wales In 21 Volumes [1893-1921]
by Howard, Joseph Jackson, 1827-1902; Crisp, Frederick Arthur, 1851-1922;

The Visitations of England and Wales comes in 21 volumes recording the lineage of various families, their armorial bearings etc, and additionally has 12 volumes of further notes to the 21 and addenda and corrections at the end of each volume..

These 'Heraldic visitations' were tours of inspection undertaken by Kings of Arms (and more often by junior officers of arms (or Heralds) as deputies) throughout England, Wales and Ireland. Their purpose was to regulate and register the coats of arms of nobility and gentry and boroughs, and to record pedigrees. They took place from 1530 to 1688, and their records (akin to an upper class census) provide important source material for historians and genealogists.
