Spiral - Alto Saxophone

When faced with the task of writing any solo piece, a sense of continuity is always an important factor for me. One way that several composers have solved this problem recently is through electronic means, by using loop pedals. However, I wanted to create the same sense of looping, but in a purely acoustic way.

The spiral shape, such as that found in shells in nature, therefore informed the large and small scale construction of this piece given its looping nature, and also its self- replicating quality. The piece, in three sections, could be thought of as starting at the centre of a spiral, with the greatest amount of detail, and zooming out throughout the piece, so that thedetailed surface is gradually slowed down and becomes part of larger, related gestures.
