This portrait was inspired by the beautiful daughter of a dear friend, whose intense gaze evoked all the fearless nobility of a young African queen. While my intent was to depict a fantasy, not a direct interpretation of any single African culture, I drew inspiration from the spectacular intricate beadwork of the Masai people and the beautiful bright kente cloth made in Ghana. The flowers she holds are called crossberry and grow in Kenya. Zumaridi is the Swahili word for "Emerald".
