The Patricia Okoumou Song

I first reached out to Patricia Okoumou about writing a children's song inspired by her in mid-July. Her act of protest on the 4th of July struck me as heroic in the truest sense of the word. A real life allegory and modern-day folktale of resistance. As a children’s songwriter it called out to me to be told, and honored, through music. We were also sharing the same legal team to represent our respective protest-related cases, so I had a good pretext for reaching out to her! I was honored and humbled that she accepted, and I am proud to share the song I wrote with you now.

Patricia's story is ideal for those trying to raise socially conscious children because it creates a point of entry for grown-ups to talk to children about this terrible and difficult issue in a way that empowers children to be brave and take action against injustices, rather than just feeling terrified or paralyzed. I have used this song as a tool to engage in discussions with my own 3 year old daughter about what our own government is doing to families and children seeking safety and a better life in our country. If you are a parent or caregiver who has struggled with how and how much to talk to your children about this topic, fearing that the subject will be too traumatizing or confusing for their young hearts and minds, then I hope that my song will help you take that courageous step. We owe it to our children to give them the tools they will need to face down a world filled with injustice.
